Chronologischer Ablauf:

  • 08.02.1725 – Start der Expedition

Beschreibung:

Die Erste Kamtschatka-Expedition:

  • war eine zwischen 1725 und 1730 durchgeführte Forschungs- und Entdeckungsreise unter der Leitung des dänischen Marineoffiziers Vitus Bering (1681-1741), die noch der russische Zar Peter I. angeregt und geplant hatte. Zu den Aufgaben der Expedition gehörte die Feststellung der Ostgrenze des Russischen Reiches sowie der Beweis einer Landverbindung zwischen Asien und Amerika (siehe auch Deschnjow). Wesentlichen Anteil an ihr hatte der russischen Sibirienforscher Alexei Iljitsch Tschirikow (1703-1748).
  • Nach seiner Ankunft in Nischne-Kamtschatsk 1728 ließ Bering die 18 m lange Schaluppe St. Gabriel bauen. Mit diesem Schiff untersuchte er ab Juli 1728 die Küste Sibiriens in nördlicher Richtung, entdeckte einige Inseln und drang immer weiter ins Nordpolarmeer vor, ohne eine Landverbindung zwischen Asien und Amerika zu finden. Am 15. August 1728 gab Bering aufgrund schlechten Wetters das Kommando zum Wendemanöver und kehrte bei 67°18′ nördlicher Breite um. Er hatte die später nach ihm benannte Meeresenge zwar schon durchquert, den letzten Beweis dafür, dass es keine Landverbindung zwischen Asien und Nordamerika gibt, blieb er jedoch schuldig.
